WIMISOM held in Garowe a training for journalists on program production on awareness raising on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Two days of training for 20 Journalists from local media houses was aimed to equip journalists with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively report on FGM and raise awareness of its dangers.

During the training, journalists were taken through various topics including the types of FGM, its prevalence in the country, and the legal framework governing the practice. They were also trained on how to approach sensitive topics such as FGM and how to engage with affected communities.

The training emphasized the important role of the media in raising awareness of FGM and its impact on the lives of girls and women and the way journalists use their platforms to educate the public on the dangers of FGM and to encourage communities to abandon the practice.

The journalists expressed their gratitude for the training and learned a lot about how to produce effective programs on FGM to engage with the affected communities and to report on the topic in a sensitive and informative manner.

FGM is a harmful traditional practice that affects millions of girls and women around the world. It involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia and can cause severe physical and psychological problems. Despite efforts to eradicate the practice, it still persists in many communities, particularly in Africa and the Middle East.

The training for journalists on program production on awareness raising on FGM is a step in the right direction towards ending this harmful practice. By equipping journalists with the necessary skills and knowledge, they can play a crucial role in raising awareness on FGM and advocating for its abolition.

This Training is a part of the project to raise awareness about female genital mutilation, which we are implementing with the support of GIZ. The project also includes social awareness messages and public discussions.
