WIMISOM hosts a discussion Meeting with Journalists and Media experts in Garowe

Garowe, Puntland – The Women in Media Initiative Somalia (WIMISOM) convened a discussion meeting at its office in Garowe, bringing together the WIMISOM team, renowned media trainer and expert Mahad Koronto, and a group of journalists from across Puntland.

The gathering served as a platform for open dialogue on the realities of journalism in Somalia, with a particular focus on the Puntland region. Participants discussed the wide range of challenges faced by local journalists and media houses, including issues of safety, professional standards, and limited access to resources. The discussions also explored practical solutions to overcome these barriers and strategies for further strengthening the media’s role in promoting accountability and democratic values.

WIMISOM highlighted its ongoing commitment to advancing media freedom and professional growth among Somali journalists. “This meeting reflects our vision of supporting journalists to thrive despite the challenges they face. By equipping them with the right tools and knowledge, we aim to foster a strong and ethical media sector,” stated Shukri Gashan, WIMISOM’s mentor and training officer.

As part of the program, copies of the book Hagaha Wariyaha iyo Horumariyaha Warbaahinta were distributed to the attending journalists. Authored by media trainer Mahad Koronto and published by WIMISOM in 2022, the book provides practical knowledge, professional skills, and ethical frameworks designed to enhance journalistic capacity and integrity.

WIMISOM Head of Programs Yahye Mohamed emphasized the need for collaboration among journalists, media experts, and media development organizations to address the challenges and to develop and sustain a support system for journalists.

Mahad Koronto underscored the importance of investing in professional development for Somali journalists. “Strong journalism requires continuous learning and adaptation. This book is intended to be a resource that empowers journalists to uphold ethics, improve their craft, and contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.

The meeting concluded with a call for greater collaboration between media stakeholders and organizations like WIMISOM to advance press freedom, safeguard journalists, and build a stronger foundation for independent media in Puntland and beyond.
